Guided Visit : The Skateboard Trail

Follow the trail in the company of two guides; one from the Bordeaux World Heritage department and professional skateboarder Léo Valls, consultant and initiator of skaturbanism. Event organized as part of the National Architecture Days and the Connect festival.

At the heart of the UNESCO-listed Bordeaux Port of the Moon area, discover the relationship between skateboarding and Bordeaux’s urban spaces, from the re-emerging districts of the past to today’s heritage city.

Skateboarding first appeared in Bordeaux in the 1970s, on the vast concrete slabs of the newly-built Mériadeck district. While the history of this sport is now inherent to local tangible and intangible heritage, Bordeaux has not always had an easy relationship with its skateboarders. For a certain time, skateboarding was even prohibited in most of the city’s public spaces. In recent years, growing recognition of skateboarding as an urban culture in its own right coupled with a dynamic approach to the heritage city in the framework of UNESCO has helped foster dialogue. This has led to a unique approach in the shaping of the urban environment, described as skaturbanism.
